| Your situation | Best route |
| I am flying to India soon and buying a few items | Carry them in baggage |
| I am buying a few gifts and not travelling | Courier from Canada |
| I am buying a lot, or for several families | Air freight |
| I am moving to India soon | Ship with your household goods (see the moving guide) |
| The store offers delivery to India | Direct delivery, with duty and warranty checked first |
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
| Carry in your baggage | A few items if you are travelling | Free allowance limits, airline baggage rules, and declaring at customs |
| Courier from Canada | A few gifts for family | Duty is collected from the recipient before delivery |
| Retailer ships directly to India | Items from stores that deliver to India | Many Canadian stores don’t ship to India, and duty and warranty issues still apply |
| Air freight | Larger batches or several people’s purchases | Priced by weight, and the rules for new goods still apply |
| Extra checked bags | A few boxes | Cheaper than freight up to about 8–10 bags, according to Pikkol’s Canada to India guide |
In most cases, yes. Duty is charged on the CIF value, meaning the cost of the goods plus freight and insurance, and the recipient usually pays it before the parcel is released. As an example from the Chennai Customs FAQ, gifts are charged basic customs duty at 20% plus IGST at 28% on the combined value, a total of about 53.6% of the declared value. Other personal imports with a commercial transaction are assessed at a lower combined rate of about 42%. Rates vary by item and change over time, so check the current position with your courier or the CBIC website before you pay for anything expensive.
Sources disagree. Some courier sites say gifts up to ₹5,000 are exempt. Indian customs’ own FAQ says gifts sent by courier or post are permitted only with full duty paid. Follow the official position, and confirm with the courier before you send.
Travellers can bring goods within a free allowance, which is currently ₹75,000 under the Baggage Rules, 2026. Pikkol’s guide also states that one new laptop per adult passenger (18+) is duty-free, and invoices are needed for newer high-value items. If you are moving rather than just travelling, the Transfer of Residence allowance covers used household goods, not new purchases. See the Canada to India moving guide for how it works.
Good choices:
Think twice, or skip:
Large quantities of identical items may be treated as goods for sale, which fall outside personal allowances.

Black Friday is on 27 November, and delivery rushes follow. If you are flying to India for the holidays, buying and carrying is the simplest option. If you are sending by courier or air freight, allow time for transit and customs clearance, and don’t promise a delivery date before the shipment is cleared. Pikkol’s air freight takes 7–14 days door to door.
If you are sending many boxes, several people’s purchases, or moving back to India, a freight or household move may suit you better than parcels. Compare quotes line by line using our guide to comparing international moving quotes, and see our international relocation services. If you want to send items the other way, from India to family abroad, our international parcel service covers gifts, books, clothing and more.
The most common mistake is buying first and checking customs later. A discounted item can lose its saving once duty, shipping and a warranty gap are counted. Work out your route before you order, keep your invoices, and buy only what you can carry or what is worth freighting. For quick answers on moving and shipping, browse our FAQs.
How can I send Black Friday purchases from Canada to India?
You can carry them in your baggage, send them by courier, or freight them by air. Expect Indian customs duty on new items.
Do I pay duty on gifts sent from Canada to India?
Usually yes. Indian customs’ FAQ says gifts sent by courier or post are allowed only with full duty paid, and it lists no duty-free gift limit.
Is there a ₹5,000 duty-free gift limit?
Some courier sites say so, but Indian customs’ own FAQ doesn’t recognise a duty-free gift value. Check with your courier before sending.
Is it cheaper to carry items in my baggage than to ship them?
Often, for a few items. Travellers have a free allowance, and one new laptop per adult is duty-free. Beyond about 8–10 bags, air or sea freight is usually better value.
Who pays the customs duty in India?
The recipient, before the parcel is released for delivery.
Will Canadian appliances work in India?
Often not. Canada uses 120V/60Hz and India uses 230V/50Hz, so many 120V appliances won’t run properly.
What documents does my family need in India?
The invoice and a valid ID showing identity and address, such as Aadhaar, passport, PAN or voter ID.
